  1. Lesson Plan – Grade 11 Date: January 3nd, 2011 Period 53 Unit 9 THE POST OFFICE Lesson READING I. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: - deduce the meaning of some words in certain context. - scan for specific details. II. Language Focus: - Grammar: - New words: equip, express, transfer, notify, recipient, subscribe to newspapers . . . III. Teaching Aids: cassette player, textbook . . . . IV. Procedures: Stages/ Students’ Teacher’s Activities Time Activities Chatting Warm – up -T raises some questions: T  Ss (5 minutes) + T shows Ss a letter and asks: What’s is this? ( A letter) + Where can you post a letter? (At the post office) + How far is it from your house to the nearest post office? (  . . . kilometers) + How often do you go to the post office? What for? (Once/twice a week. To post letters / to make a phone call / to T  Ss buy phone cards) + What services do you think the post office offer? ( mail, phone call, . . . ) -T leads in the new lesson. -T asks Ss to work in pairs to discuss and give out the right services of the post office in the picture in the textbook. Pre – -T moves around the class and gives help. reading -T encourage Ss to add more services T  Ss * Expected answers: a. Mail and Parcel Service b. Express Money Transfer (8 minutes) c. Phone Call and Faxes d. Facsimile Service e. Press Distribution Service -T elicits or pre-teaches some new words. Vocabulary Pre-teach T  Ss + equip (v): supply with what is needed in a company or an office + express (a): very fast + transfer (v): to hand over from one person or one place to another S  S + notify (v) + recipient (n): receiver + subscribe to newspapers (exp) While – Task 1 – Multiple Choice reading -T asks Ss to work in pairs and do Task 1. S  S -T asks Ss to go back to the passage and find the correct answers. -T tells Ss to compare their answers with each other. S  S -T calls on some pairs to act out the activity in front of the class. -T comments and gives the suggested answers. * Expected answer: 1. It’s equipped with advanced technology and a spacious and T  Ss pleasant front office. 2. They are sending letters by air, surface mail or express mail. 3. It is used for notifying the recipient of the time and place to receive the call. 4. I’ll have to subscribe to my favourite newspapers or magazines. Activity 3 – Finding evidence in the text to support the (10 minutes) statements -T asks Ss to work in pairs again and find evidence in the text that S  S support the statements in the textbooks. -T goes around the class to help Ss. -T gets Ss to report their answers in front of the class. -T gives feedback. * Expected answers: T  Ss 1. It opens daily from 7 a.m to 9 p.m 2. They offer a very competitive rate for parcels under 15 kilos. 3. They have Express Mail Service and your EMS will be delivered in the shortest possible time. 4. The money will sent in less than 24 hours. Post – Task 4 – Speak-it-up reading -T requires Ss to work in groups of four to discuss the questions: 1. Which service provided by Thanh Ba Post Office do you think is Ss  Ss (5 minutes) the most important and why? 2. What services do you think Thanh Ba Post Office should have in the future? -T goes around to control and gives help to Ss. S  Ss -T calls on some Ss to present their ideas in front of the class. * Expected ideas for discussion: In the future, Thanh Ba Post Office should have Flower Telegram Service, Banking Service and Information Telecommunication Service. Homework -T asks Ss to write about Thanh Ba Post Office using the cues above or their own words. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: - make requests and talk about different postal services. II. Language Focus: - Grammar: - New words: III. Procedures: Students’ Stages/Time Teacher’s Activities Activities Warm – up Game – Jumpled words -T gives out a list of jumbled words (prepared beforehand on a T  Ss (5minutes) paper) -T give Ss 2 minutes to prepare individually, and then asks them S to go to the board to write down the correct words. 1. mali 2. nomey trerfans 3. xaf 4. repss deervyli -T goes around the class to control the game -T gives feedback * Expected answers: 1. mail 2. money transfer 3. fax 4. press delivery Pre – Task 1 – Practising the dialogue speaking -T requires Ss to work in pairs, practising the dialogue in the S  S book. -T asks Ss to answer the questions: “What service is the customer S (8 minutes) using in the dialogue?” -T moves around the class to help Ss. -T calls on some pairs to role play the dialogue in front of the S  S class. * Expected answer: Facsimile Service While – Task 2 – Making a conversation speaking -T ask Ss to work in pairs to make a conversation from the suggestions in the textbook. S  S -T encourage Ss to think of more ideas to add to their list. (18 minutes) -T moves around to control and give help if necessary. -T asks Ss to report their results to the class. T  Ss -T gathers feedbacks and gives out the correct answer Post – Task 3 – Role play speaking -T asks Ss to think of situations that they themselves need to go to the post office. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: - listen a monologue avout the development of Vietnam’s telephone system for details. II. Language Focus: - Grammar: revision - New words: III. Teaching Aids: cassette player, textbook, board . . . IV. Procedures: Students’ Stages/Time Teacher’s Activities Activities Warm – up -T asks Ss a question: Which is the quickest, a phone call, a fax, an e-mail or a letter? (3minutes) * Expected answers: A phone call T  Ss -T lead in the new lesson Pre – Pre-teaching vocabulary listening -T elicits some new words from Ss T  Ss + commune (n) communal(a) + rural network (n) + capacity (n) (8 minutes) + subscriber (n): a fixed sum of money every month for the telephone service -T requires Ss to work in pairs to ask and answer the questions in S  S the textbook. -T goes around the class and controls them. -T calls on some pairs to act out their conversations. T  Ss -T gives feedback. While- Task 1 – Multiple – Choice listening -T asks Ss to work individually and listen to the monologue and check their prediction. S (12 minutes) -T plays the tape more than once if necessary. -T asks Ss to compare the answers with their partners. -T invites some Ss to explain their answers in front of the class. S -T plays the tape again and asks Ss to do Task 2. -T plays the tape several times if necessary. S  S -T lets Ss discuss the answers with a partner. -T comments and gives correct answers. * Expected answers: T  Ss 1. China has the highest growth in the number of telephone subscribers. 2. In the early 1990s, there were only 140,000 telephones in Vietnam. 3. In 1996, the fixed telephone numbers were changed from 6 to 7 digits in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City as well as 5 to 6 digits in other provinces. 4. In 2001 5. There are 6,014 communal post offices in Vietnam. Post- Groupwork Speaking listening -T asks Ss to work in groups of four to summarise the main ideas Ss  Ss of the listening passage. The summary should have the following (8 minutes) points: 1. Vietnam’s rapid growth in telephone numbers. 2. The addition of digits to existing telephone numbers to meet the increasing demands. S  Ss 3. The reduction in monthly telephone fees. 4. The expansion of the telepgone networks to Vietnam’s rural areas. T  Ss -T goes around the class and helps Ss in their speaking. -T has some Ss present their ideas in front of the class. -T asks for comments from other Ss. -T gives out his remarks on Ss’s presentation. Homework -T asks Ss to rewrite the summary of the listening passage into (2 minutes) their notebooks. T  Ss -T asks Ss to prepare WRITING for the next period. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: - write a letter to express satisfaction or dissatisfaction. II. Language Focus: - Grammar: revision - New words: revision III. T  Ss (5 minutes) Read the following adjectives and underline those can make people / things satisfied. polite, rude, cold, helpful, spacious, cramped, large, small, good, bad, reasonable, expensive, cheap, arrogant, punctual, reliable S -T asks Ss to work individually with the handout. S  S -T tells Ss to exchange their answers with a partner. -T goes around the class to give help. -T gives feedback and correct answers T  Ss * Expected answers: polite, rude, cold, helpful, spacious, cramped, large, small, good, bad, reasonable, expensive, cheap, arrogant, punctual, reliable -T can introduces the adjectives that make people unsatisfied (the remaining adjectives) -T introduces the new lesson. Pre-writing Class discussion -T sets the scene and gives out the topic for the discussion: T Ss T: Tell me some services at Thanh Ba Post Office Ss: Mail and parcel service, phone call, press distribution, etc. T: Now, imagine you have been using some of these services. (10 minutes) Tell me what you are satisfied with and what you are dissatisfied with. -T acts as an instructor and writes shortly Ss’s ideas on the board. The quality of the . . . . . . . . equipment` Clarify the writing task: The director of Thanh Ba post office invited you to write a letter to him describing the quality of the services -T elicits the outline from Ss. S -T gets some Ss to read aloud their writings. -T gives feedback. Post- Groupwork writing -T asks Ss to work in groups of four to talk about some satisfied Ss  Ss and dissatisfied services of a post office near their houses. (8 minutes) -T asks Ss to use the expression learnt in Task 1. -T moves around the class and gives help to Ss. S  Ss -T calls on some Ss to present their ideas in front of the class. -T collects remarks from other Ss. T  Ss -T gives feedback. Homework -T asks Ss to greeting cards to their beloved friends, relatives or their parents on the following occasions: T  Ss (2 minutes) a. Birthday b. Tet holiday -T asks students to prepare Language Focus for next period. Date: January 11th, 2011 Period 57 Unit 9(cont.) THE POST OFFICE Lesson LANGUAGE FOCUS I. Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: - practise pronunciation and distinguish the sounds / sp /, / st / and / sk / - use defining and non-defining relative clauses appropriately. II. Language Focus: - Grammar: as above - New words: III. Teaching Aids: Textbooks, poster, pictures . . . IV. Procedures: Students’ Stages/Time Teacher’s Activities Activities Warm-up -T divides the class into two groups and asks Ss to close their Ss  Ss books. (4minutes) -T asks each group to write on the board: + four words containing the sound / sp / like speak S + four words containing the sound / st / like street + four words containing the sound / sk / like ask or skim -T sets the time limited in 2 minutes. (7 minutes) -T asks Ss to pronounce the sounds several times. -T makes sure that Ss are aware of the difference between the sounds. T  Ss Activity 2 – Practise these sentences -T plays the tape and asks them to repeat. S -T calls on some Ss to repeat the sounds clearly and slowly. -T asks Ss to work in pairs and practise the sentences. Ss  Ss -T introduces peer correction. -T goes around the class and provides help if necessary. Grammar Defining and Non-defining Relative Clauses Presentation: T  Ss (8 minutes) -T helps Ss revise the usages of Defining and Non-defining Relative Clauses by elicitng some examples from Ss. a. I met someone who said he knew you. b. The book which I borrowed from the school library is very S intersting. c. This woman, who lives next door, is a doctor. d. My father, who is fifty years old, is a doctor. Activity 1 – Explaining the meaning of the words. (8 minutes) -T asks Ss to do exercise 1 individually, using relative clauses. S -T asks Ss to compare the answers with their partners. S  S -T calls on some Ss to read aloud the sentences. -T gives feedback and correct answers. * Expected answers: T  Ss 1. A burglar is someone who breaks into the house to steal things 2. A customer is someone who buys something from a shop. 3. A shoplifter is someone who steals from a shop. 4. A coward is someone who is not brave. 5. A tenant is someone who pays rent to live an a house or a flat. Activity 2 – Sentence Completion (8 minutes) -T gets Ss to do Exercise 2 individually. S -T goes around and gives helps to Ss. -T asks Ss to compare their results with others.
